When one of our volunteers Helen, presented us with the idea of holding a community brunch, we saw it as another opportunity to give to the community. During this time, our events and projects were being held in East Flatbush sector of Brooklyn which is one of the largest diverse Caribbean and Hispanic community.
Within many Caribbean cultures Sundays are consider to be the day of relaxation, family, and spirituality. Morning would begin with exquisite meals from their native cultures, so we made this our motif (theme) for this event. We held a one day Sunday Brunch through the support of Helen who played a large role in the planning and cooking while working alongside the Holy Innocents Pantry. Open to the public this event generated over $300 in donations, including raffle ticket donations to win one of the custom-built computer that were completed during our Computer Workshop. Our understanding of what went into the food helped us when developing our Healthy Eating Workshop the following year.
